Upset

I’m really really upset. Early this morning, around 1 am, I was drying my hair in my room when I heard something strange. There was loud barking from downstairs. I stopped drying my hair and looked at my roommate. We simultaneously grabbed our keys and I told her to get some water. I grabbed an extra pair of slippers.

We stood at the top of the stairs. There was yipping, barking, howling and in the midst of it, there was a cat yowling. I don’t mean the caterwauling you hear when they get it on. It was yowling in pain. Roomie dumped some water down the stairs. I threw a slipper but the barking went on so we hurried down.

What we saw was heart-breaking and frightening. A pack of dogs was attacking a cat. The cat was screaming in pain. I threw my other slipper. My roommate drenched them in water (Cold water) but still they wouldn’t leave the poor cat alone.

Roomie had the bright idea of barking louder to scare the dogs away. Somehow, it did. One ran off as soon as she started barking and when I joined in, the rest left the poor cat alone.

The cat couldn’t move. It was bleeding and breathing shallowly. I called a friend studying vet but the only options were to go to a private vet which was about an hour away and cost more than all of the students combined could afford, or wait till morning and send the cat to the Faculty of Veterinary Studies.

We we spared the decision when it died in the rain a few minutes later.

We covered it with a box, buried it in the morning.

This isn’t the first time that the dogs have entered the hostel area and this is not the first time they have acted aggressively towards other animals and humans.

Personally, I’m a dog person. I have a dog called Willow who is the cutest dog ever no contest. I like dogs much better than cats.

But I’m afraid. Today it was a cat. Tomorrow it might be one of us.

I posted a series of comments saying that if dogs entered the hostel area, students could try to chase them away by splashing cold or hot water at them or barking loudly.

I don’t know what upset me more: The fact that I saw a cat getting mauled by a pack of dogs, or the fact every comment to my status updates were about how cruel I was.

I’m still upset.  I deleted every post and I don’t feel like pursuing this issue with the Safety Department anymore.
